Stand in Holy Places #3: Rise of Zion

by Chad Daybell

Quick Overview

This is a Mormon version of the "Left Behind" series by LaHaye & Jenkins. It is founded on the historically accurate story of the Lord removing his people to a safe location prior to a cleansing (the Mormon "call-out"). It is, however, missing the literary style that LaHaye and Jenkins gave their story. Both stories are boringly predictable, if you understand the underlying eschatology of the Mormon call-out and the Rapture preached by the Evangelical Christian denominations. The eschatology of the call-out/rapture event is far more fleshed out and believable in the "Holy Places" story. If you can get through the seventh-grade reading level and predictable situations without becoming bored, you can pick up a great deal of detail about the event from the Mormon point of view.

Ironically, as you read both series, you come to the inevitable conclusion that they refer to the same event. In "Standing in Holy Places," the Saints are directed to places of safety in the mountains; in "Left Behind" they are caught up and simply disappear, leaving unmanned cars to crash into each other and unmanned aircraft to crash into the ground. Either way, Christ's sanctified are preserved from the cleansing of the wicked from the earth and the destruction of the Anti-Christ and his kingdom. For my money, "Standing In Holy Places" has worked things out and far closer to reality than "Left Behind," which depends on Calvinistic sophistry mixed with popular modern assumptions on what it takes to be 'Saved,' a concept upon which not even two Evangelicals can agree.

It has been a remarkable year since the Saints arrived in Independence, Missouri to establish New Jerusalem. Now it has become a rapidly growing city as Saints from around the world come to Zion. It is a time of relative peace, but there are still several important events that must take place before the Second Coming. Join the members of the North, Dalton and Brown families as they participate in such memorable events as the dedication of the New Jerusalem Temple, and the discovery and return of the Ten Lost Tribes. As the Saints devise a plan to regain Salt Lake City from the evil leader Sherem and to create cities of Zion throughout the Rocky Mountains, the Coalition forces have regrouped and are planning another attack that will affect the entire world. The Rise of Zion, the third novel in the bestelling Standing in Holy Places series, paints a vivid picture of exciting prophesied events that still must occur before the Second Coming.
