  • Details

Published originally in 1945, this book captures a picture of life for one large, active family during World War II. As the book opens, Mrs. Mitchell, her five children, and their grandmother are at Union Station in Washington D.C. to say good-bye to Mr. Mitchell as he goes off to join the army. Things that have faded from our lives but were significant during that war like shoe rationing, war stamps and bonds, shortages, Victory gardens, refugees, and taking in lodgers weave into this tale of the adventures of the spunky Mitchell children. They do their best to contribute to the war effort and to help their mother deal with the demands of life during a war when all citizens felt obligated to help fight in small everyday ways. The author drew directly from her family life with growing children for the material for this book and the many others she wrote. Size 0.72" H x 8.51" L x 5.57" W, 236 pages
